Tiny Desk Contest
Wish us luck ...
Chelsea and I have entered the above video in the Tiny Desk Contest. Winning this contest would be a really big deal for us! Losing, on the other hand, would not be a big deal at all, so … win / win, sort of, I guess.
Perhaps you have heard of the Tiny Desk Concerts: they take place in a small office in New York City. A wide array of musicians - ranging from independent obscure artists to big names, like Dave Matthews - set up behind Bob Boilen’s desk and play a short set for an online audience (plus a few random NPR staffers). The Tiny Desk Contest, however, is only open to independent unsigned talent. How cool that they are trying to share their reach with “undiscovered” artists! This is the kind of thing the magic and glory of the internet is supposed to lead to: greater exposure for hidden gems that would have fallen completely through the cracks under the older models for cultivating, distributing, and promoting cultural works.
The contest winner gets flown to NYC to play a “real” Tiny Desk Concert. NPR also books them a short tour of additional performances and promotes the whole deal to their global audience. Way cool! While I’ll be shocked and delighted if we win, preparing this video has been a fun project in its own right. It lives on my YouTube channel, where you can find a random and growing assortment of other short videos, mostly focusing on music, travel and food. Stop by my channel and - you know the deal - Like, Subscribe, and ring the Notifications Bell so you’ll know when I upload more stuff. I’m working on improving both the quantity and quality of the viewing materials there … I’m no Scorsese, but it’s a fun journey nonetheless. It’s a lot more fun if people like you (meaning friends, family, and random internet strangers) stop by and leave some comments, so … see you over there!
